Officers win awards in shooting contest

NORMAN — Norman Police Department officers recently traveled to New Mexico to compete in the annual National Police Shooting Championship.

Detective David King, Sgts. Robert Wasoski and William Crews and MPOs Joshua Barker and Jeremy Garnand traveled to the NRA-sponsored event.

The focus of the championship is based on the Police Pistol Combat Competition, which allows officers to fire revolvers and semi-automatic pistols from 3-, 7-, 15-, 25- and 50-yard lines.

Officers also fired shotguns from 15-, 20-, 25- and 50-yard lines. Competitors fired in 15 individual matches, along with the shotgun match. Officers concluded the event with three team matches. Almost 600 competitors participated from across the globe.

Individually, the officers won the following awards:

· King — one first, two thirds, one fifth

· Wasoski — five thirds, one fourth, one fifth

· Crews — two firsts, one second, two thirds, one fourth, two fifths

· Barker — two firsts, one third, two fourths, two fifths

· Garnand — three firsts, one second, one third, one fourth, two fifths.

King and Garnand won the first-place stock auto two-man team match. King, Wasoski, Crews and Garnand won third place in the open revolver four-man team match and sixth place in the semi-automatic four-man team. All of the team matches were fired in the Sharpshooter Class.
