Man charged with murder

NORMAN — The man who allegedly murdered the 23-year-old daughter of a Norman police officer was formally charged Monday in Grady County District Court.

Steven Ray Thompson, 27, of Amber, was charged with first-degree murder of Sara Maisano, daughter of Deputy Chief Jim Maisano. Thompson also was charged with assault and battery with a dangerous weapon to his 26-year-old fiancee, Katie Garner.

According her obituary, Sara Maisano was a “girly girl” who liked playing dress-up, putting on makeup and doing hair and nails. She had a soft spot for animals and loved the outdoors, which included hunting and fishing.

Garner has since been treated and released from the OU Medical Center and is expected to make a full recovery. She had been medi-flighted and admitted into the Intensive Care Unit for head and torso injuries.

When Deputy Tommy Rutledge arrived at the scene around 11:30 a.m. June 27, he found Garner sitting on the couch inside the residence. Garner was described as “barely conscious and able to speak,” according to the affidavit filed with charges.

Rutledge asked Garner if there was anyone else in the home and she said “in the bedroom,” but the door to the bedroom was locked, the affidavit states.

When no one inside the room answered, the deputy forcibly opened the door. The affidavit states that Rutledge observed a deceased woman lying partially on the bed with what appeared to be a gunshot wound to the left eye.

Deputy Rutledge also observed two weapons in plain view on the bed of the master bedroom, the affidavit states. He then cleared the remainder of the residence and secured it.

While Garner was awaiting transport to the hospital, she told Deputy Phil Blevins that Thompson had been hitting her and Maisano in the head and body with the barrel and butt of a shotgun and had beaten them all night, according to the affidavit.
