Man charged after alleged stabbing

NORMAN — A Norman man who has previously been convicted of several felonies was charged Tuesday with assault and battery with a dangerous weapon in Cleveland County court.

Sigmund Lamar James, 25, allegedly stabbed another man in July after the man attempted to stop James from assaulting his ex-girlfriend, according to the probable cause affidavit.

James was visiting his ex-girlfriend’s house in Norman on July 20 when he realized two other men were also there. According to witnesses, James then began to assault the woman, the affidavit said.

“A struggle ensued when the (stabbing) victim and a witness attempted to stop the assault,” the document states.

The group then fell through a glass table during the struggle, at which time James picked up a piece of the broken glass and allegedly stabbed the victim, identified as Brandon Berry several times. Berry then fled the scene, the affidavit said.

Berry was transported to the OU Medical Center where he underwent surgery for injuries to his chest and torso. He was admitted and spent several days at the medical center recovering from his injuries.

When police interviewed James, he said he acted in self-defense. However, Berry did not have any offensive injuries and James made no attempt to contact police after the incident occurred, the affidavit said.

James has previously pled guilty to assault and battery with a dangerous weapon in Cleveland County back in September 2007.

The incident involved James shooting someone in the leg at a Norman home. The victim said James was an associate. The victim suffered an open fracture of both the tibia and fibula in his leg because of the bullet.

James has also been convicted of or pled guilty to possession of a firearm by a supervised probationer and possession of a stolen vehicle in September 2007 as well as false personation in January 2007.
