Police suggest alternative routes for first home game

NORMAN — The first University of Oklahoma home football game for the 2013 season is approaching soon and Norman police want to advise motorists of construction zones and parking situations that may delay or inconvenience the public.

The game is set for Saturday, Aug. 31, and this year, one of the police department’s biggest concerns is construction along Interstate 35 from Main Street to the South Canadian River.

The city of Norman’s Traffic Control Division and police suggest drivers traveling south on I-35 use either exit 133, which is left exit for Highway 77, or use exit 112 at Tecumseh Road. Once off the interstate, motorists may take a variety of north or south thoroughfares to the stadium.

City and university officials intend to release a comprehensive plan in the next few days that will include maps of suggested routes.

Police also recommend that motorists exercise good judgment when parking before the game. Traditionally, the police department experiences a dramatic surge in parking-related calls during a home football game.

For example, on a typical weekend, enforcement officials issue only a handful of parking calls, but on a game day Saturday, they can rise to more than a hundred.

Most fines for typical parking violations range from $20 to $30, but some violations can result in a towed vehicle.

Violations that can result in a towed vehicle include:

· Parking in a tow-away zone or fire lane

· Blocking a driveway, street or alley

· Blocking a fire hydrant

· Illegal use of handicapped parking

· Illegal parking on private property

Police said wrecker fees and fines associated with a towed vehicle can become quite expensive.

According to wrecker companies, a typical game day often results in 20 to 30 tows.
