First OU football game for fan who stormed the field

NORMAN — The Sooner fan tackled Saturday by an Oklahoma Highway Patrol trooper on Owen Field during the second half of the Iowa State game was apologetic Monday.

“I really didn’t think this was going to be this big of a deal. I didn’t want to cause any trouble,” said Ronald Butch Mais, 35, of Edmond.

Mais said it was his first time to attend an OU football game and he just became overly excited.

“When OU was just smoking ISU, I just got excited. I was jumping up and down and the next thing I knew, I was jumping the fence,” he said. “I was just trying to rile up the crowd.”

The fan gave credit to Trooper Brian Orr, who tackled him, for a job well done.

“It was a good tackle. I wouldn’t expect anything less on that OU field,” Mais said. “One of the (officers) said, ‘Why didn’t you run out there naked?’”

Mais joked that next time he’ll have to bring his helmet, following with assurance that he was kidding.

“I will not do this again, I promise,” he said.

Players, coaches and others commented on the run and the tackle. A senior player called it the highlight of his career.

An OHP press release Monday said Orr saw Mais unlawfully enter the playing field and quickly took the person into custody.

“Trooper Orr is among several officers responsible for the protection of the university’s football team, coaching staff and fans who were attending the game. He perceived a legitimate threat and quickly acted upon that threat by subduing the suspect and taking him into custody,” OHP spokesperson Captain George Brown said.

“With the steady increase in security measures, especially during outdoor sporting events, Trooper Orr’s actions were necessary and appropriate, given the unknown circumstance this suspect presented at the time.”
