Man attemps to rob Norman resident

NORMAN — One Norman resident said he had a little too much excitement Tuesday morning in the eastside Walmart parking lot after grocery shopping after someone attempted to rob him.

“I came out of Walmart and was putting my groceries in the back of my truck,” said George Denham, 76.

Then he heard a voice mumbling something about keys, so because he is hard of hearing, Denham turned around and asked the man what he had said.

“He said, ‘I want your keys.’ Then he pulled back his coat and showed me a gun,” Denham said.

After Denham told the man there was no way he was giving up his keys, Denham turned around and walked back into Walmart.

The man was described as a slender-looking white male, approximately 18 to 20 years old, according to Norman police.

Denham said he later discovered that the man had stolen the gun — which turned out to be a BB gun — from Walmart.

“He probably used that to try to intimidate me,” he said.

One thing that has Denham curious is why the man only asked for his keys.

“Was he in trouble? He wanted out of town? It was cold?” Denham said, thinking about why the man would want his vehicle.

Norman Police Capt. Tom Easley said several officers in the area passed along information about the possible suspect. Walmart also has offered assistance with surveillance tapes, he said.

This isn’t the first time someone has attempted to rob Denham in Norman, although it is the first time he reported it to the police.

Several years ago, someone tried robbing Denham on Lindsey Street during his morning walk.

“He walked toward me and he grunted something and said, ‘Look out,’” Denham said. “Then he was coming back on me and I had a little old knife. I pointed it at him and said, ‘Not today, fella.’”

Denham said he then just kept walking. He looked around for a police officer, but he never saw one. The incident was never reported.
