National Night Out is Oct. 1

NORMAN — For the first time, Norman will be celebrating National Night Out, which is intended to bring people out of their homes and become active within their neighborhoods, in October.

From 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Oct. 1, the Norman Police Department encourages Norman residents to lock their doors, turn on their outside lights and spend the evening getting to know their neighbors.

“To assist the Norman Police Department with crime prevention, you can come out of your homes, get to know your neighbors and your local officers. National Night Out is a wonderful opportunity to do this,” police said.

National Night Out is designed to:

· Heighten crime and drug prevention awareness,

· Strengthen neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships,

· Generate support for, and participation in, local anti-crime efforts, and

· Send a message to criminals, letting them know neighborhoods care and will not be victimized.

National Night Out is sponsored by the National Association of Town Watch in partnership with Target. Norman Police Department said they are hoping the new date, during cooler weather, will encourage more people to take part in this important prevention event.

Those interested in starting a Neighborhood Watch group in their area can contact Sgt. Jennifer Newell. Individuals do not have to be a part of a neighborhood watch group to participate in National Night Out. They just have to care about their neighborhood, police said.

The Norman Police Department would like to know if a neighborhood is planning an event for National Night Out. Give details of your event by e-mailing jennifer.newell@

normanok.gov or calling Sgt. Jennifer Newell at 366-5267.
