NORMAN — The Oklahoma Highway Patrol is investigating an officer-involved shooting after a road rage incident escalated to violence Sunday morning on I-35 southbound near Tecumseh Road.

OHP Spokesperson Trooper Betsy Randolph said the trooper was dispatched to a possible road rage incident around 10:30 a.m. in Norman.

While the events that unfolded are still under investigation, Randolph said there were three males in one car and a female in the other car. The female told troopers it was a road rage incident.

“When the trooper tried to take control of the situation, one suspect became physically combative,” Randolph said.

Apparently the trooper and the man began wrestling and rolled in the ditch.

“At some point he felt his life was in danger,” she said, which is when the trooper shot the individual.

The person was initially transported to OU Medical Center, but Randolph said his condition is good and it was not a life threatening situation.

The trooper is on paid administrative leave and was treated at the scene for minor injuries from the scuffle. The incident remains under investigation.
