NORMAN — Reynolds Ford of Norman is offering a reward for information on a ring of car thieves that has stolen a dozen cars from the dealership recently, General Manager Mike Lang said.
“They’ve got some ring that’s targeting us,” Lang said. “They got five cars the other night between 2 and 4 a.m. We’ve had about a dozen stolen the last 60 days. Our owner, Dale Daniels, has offered a reward of $5,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of whoever is responsible.”
The thieves are not discriminating. In addition to Ford vehicles, they’ve stolen trucks, Jeeps, Dodges and Mazdas. The number of thefts in a short time period is what makes these thefts stand out.
“We’ve had one or two (cars stolen) here or there over the years, but not four or five in one night,” Lang said.
The Norman Police are investigating. Most times, the thieves in the past have been caught. Meanwhile, the price tag is adding up on the stolen vehicles.
“We do have them insured, but it affects our deductible,” Lang said. “It gets pretty expensive for us.”
The dealership has increased security to stop the problem, but that could mean a shift to another local dealership. Lang said the dealership is cooperating fully with police in the investigation.
According to police reports, other Norman dealerships have experienced thefts this year, including Norman Chrysler Jeep, Ferguson and Bob Moore Cadillac, but none has experienced the level of loss that Reynolds is seeing.
Reports also indicate that while there were a number of Norman auto thefts in April, October has far exceeded thefts for any other month.
