We all deserve better

NORMAN — The tough treatment of the Tea (Taxed Enough Already) party and other conservative groups by the Internal Revenue Service is being assailed by leaders of both political parties.

Indeed, the IRS is one entity most of us could count on for equally tough treatment. It’s the one federal agency that we love to hate but the one that the country relies upon to fairly assess and collect taxes to keep the country running.

The acting commissioner has resigned and said foolish mistakes were made by IRS employees who were trying to handle a flood of nonprofit applications, many from conservative-minded taxpayers. Steven Miller said it had nothing to do with the politics of the groups seeking nonprofit status.

Mr. Miller, the acting commissioner, apologized to Congress.

Meanwhile, a top deputy over the tax-exempt division announced his retirement this week.

An FBI investigation has been launched as well as several Congressional hearings. Mr. Miller testified under oath at the first such hearing Friday in Washington, D.C.

There also are calls for appointment of a special prosecutor to sort out what was happening, who knew about it and when did they know.
