NORMAN — In the airlines business, time is money. American Airlines wants to try and speed up its boarding process.
Passengers who travel with only a personal item such as a purse or a brief case can now get on first.
Those with rolling suitcases will need to wait their turn and compete for overhead bin space. Airlines created the problem by charging for bags, thereby encouraging passengers to carry their luggage on with them.
American also announced it would let passengers check a carry-on bag at the gate.
That means the traveler can roll down the ramp, leave the bag at the jetway and pick a prime seat. They will have to wait at the gate for the bag after landing.
Bin space is at a premium these days.
On some flights, travelers can’t find space for their bags and must give them to flight attendants to place below.
If the procedure helps American improve its on-time performance record, look for other carriers to follow suit.
