NORMAN — Oklahoma health officials once had a motto: “Stop smoking, lose weight and get moving.”
There’s some new evidence that says moderate exercise is not enough. As we age, we also need to sit less.
That’s the finding of a study in the Journal of Physical Activity and Health. The research, as reported by the Los Angeles Times, found that for every hour of sedentary behavior, the odds were 46 percent greater that people older than 60 would have some disability in ordinary skills.
Those skills might be getting around the house or feeding themselves. People who replace half an hour of sedentary time with 30 minutes of light activity can improve their health, according to the research.
