NORMAN — Texas football coach Mack Brown knows how to light a fire under the fans of any team playing his Longhorns. He not only gave them a fuse this week, he supplied the gasoline, too.
Coach Brown said he thought it was disrespectful for opponents to flash the upside down “Hook ’Em Horns” sign with the pinky and index fingers. That comment came in response to a Texas player penalized for mocking Texas Tech’s “Guns Up” sign.
It’s not like the player wasn’t warned. Mike Davis got a verbal warning the first time he did it and drew a flag for unsportsmanlike conduct the next time.
The fuss is similar to when OU President David Boren asked the fans to stop substituting “Sooners” at the end of the national anthem at sporting events. It seemed to make the crowds sing it even louder.
Brown said players showing the horns down sign should be addressed by the Big 12. We think he protests too much. It’s a harmless gesture. Brown and the Big 12 have bigger things to worry about.
