We’re No. 2 this year

The Norman Transcript

NORMAN — Here’s a category where you don’t usually care to be No. 1. Oklahoma had the second highest number of tornadoes this past year. Only Texas had more twisters.

The Tulsa World reports that Texas had 81 tornadoes compared to the 79 recorded in Oklahoma. Only the May 20 storm at Moore was rated an EF-5. Eleven days later, the widest tornado on record tore through El Reno and western Oklahoma County.

About 1,000 tornadoes a year are recorded in the United States. In 2013, only 898 twisters were detected.

Florida, Kansas and Texas typically each have more tornadoes per year than Oklahoma.

Tornadoes will be in the headlines next week as the National Tornado Summit opens in Oklahoma City.
