NORMAN — Rotary International, the World Health Organization, UNICEF, U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation have a new ally in their quest to eradicate polio in the world.
The global partners received some more help this week. New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg has announced a $100 million, six-year donation to support the Global Polio Eradication Initiative.
New cases of polio have been reported in only three countries — Nigeria, Pakistan and Afghanistan. Volunteers have been pushed back in some of those countries. Several have been killed.
Eradication of polio could come on the watch of Rotary International President-Elect Ron Burton of Norman. He will take office in Lisbon, Portugal in June.
