NORMAN — Forbes magazine released its list of America’s richest citizens this week. Several Oklahomans usually make the list. It may be a first for Lexington, Okla., however.
Harold Hamm, a Lexington native, is now the richest man in Oklahoma, the magazine reports. The 67-year-old founder of Continental Resources has a net worth of $12.4 billion.
Although he’s No. 1 in Oklahoma, Mr. Hamm is ranked No. 33 nationally. He was 35th nationally on last year’s magazine ranking. Mr. Hamm passed George Kaiser as the richest Oklahoman.
High school classmates say Mr. Hamm grew up economically challenged in Lexington. He left town after high school and has worked in the oil patch for about 50 years. He has made major gifts to many charities, including the University of Oklahoma where his interests include diabetes research and treatment.
Other Oklahomans on the list include Hobby Lobby’s David Green, Tulsa philanthropist Lynn Schusterman and Love’s Travel Stop founders Tom and Judy Love.
