New structure just in time

The Norman Transcript

NORMAN — The hole discovered in the Main Street bridge over the interstate this week reminds us of why that structure needs to be replaced and not just repaired. The structure is about 50 years old and was built at a time when cars and trucks were much lighter.

The roughly two-feet-by-two-feet hole in the bridge deck presented more problems for drivers below than for drivers above. Crews found two other sections that needed attention Sunday evening and Monday.

The bridge replacement is one of eight that pass through Norman. Robinson Street and Tecumseh Road overpasses have had some repairs done. Rock Creek is new, and U.S. 77 and State Highway 9 West were replaced. Main, Lindsey and Highway 9 East will be replaced by 2018.
