NORMAN — The federal government’s shutdown has slowed the reporting of unemployment numbers. The metro Oklahoma City area is showing a slight decline to 4.7 percent in August.

Norman Chamber of Commerce board members received an information packet from the Norman Economic Development Coalition showing a 4.3 percent rate for July compared to 4.10 percent in July of 2012. The report shows about 2,500 unemployed persons.

The metro areas boasts one of the lowest unemployment rates in the nation. State officials said unemployment declined in 48 of the state’s 77 counties. It rose in 14 counties and remained constant in 15 counties.

Counties in southeastern Oklahoma continue to show the highest rates. Latimer County posted an 8.9 percent rate. By contrast, Roger Mills County had the state’s lowest rate at 2 percent.
