NORMAN — The decision to move more than 1,000 illegal immigrant children who were detained while trying to enter the U.S. has drawn a predictable response from state officials.
Gov. Mary Fallin and Congressman Tom Cole have said the decision is an inappropriate use of our nation’s military facilities. Fallin said it was a result of President Obama’s failed immigration policies.
The 47,000 children and teenagers, mostly from Central America, are caught up in situations mostly beyond their control. In the meantime, the children have to go somewhere, and they might as well come to Oklahoma.
Oklahomans have risen to the occasion before and used military facilities for other purposes. Bringing them to Lawton strengthens the base’s position in the military’s scheme of things. It shows an adaptable work force that can make changes to meet the needs of the nation.
Oklahoma is not the only state with military installations that has been tapped to help. Texas and California bases also are being pressed into service.
