NORMAN — Tonight’s Norman City Council meeting will be bittersweet for two longtime members. It will be the final time for Dr. Jim Griffith, Ward 6, and Tom Kovach, Ward 2.
Both brought the perspective of longtime residents to their positions. They knew Norman before it exploded in growth and have watched their city more than double in size.
Service on the council is often a thankless job. It’s time-consuming and often makes you take a position that is directly opposite of business associates, clients, friends and neighbors.
While council members deal with lofty challenges and decisions with long-range impact, it’s often the little, relatively minor things like streetlights, potholes, garbage pickup and stray animals that bring the most calls. Few people call to tell them what a great job they’re doing.
We thank both men for their service and wish them well in their future public servant endeavors. At the same time tonight, the council will welcome Jerry Lang in Ward 6 and Clint Williams in Ward 2. They’re filling some big shoes, and we wish them well.
We also take note of tonight’s council’s recognition of the late Sylvia Martin, a longtime ombudsman and council watcher who was never shy with her questions and comments. She engaged with the county, the city and the schools, first as part of a League of Women Voters project and later out of a sense of civic duty.
