NORMAN — We received a few letters to the editor when the story broke earlier this year that Norman police officers were going back on motorcycle patrol. It wasn’t the fact that they were going on two wheels that drew the readers’ letters.
It had to do with the police department’s selection of BMW motorcycles over Harley-Davidsons. Why not buy American, the readers opined.
Now, Edmond police have switched seven motorcycle patrol units from the American-made Harleys to the foreign-made BMWs.
Were they following Norman’s lead or that of the Oklahoma Highway Patrol?
No, it has to do with a change in Harley policy and lower maintenance costs. Edmond officials said Harley-Davidson used to have a more lenient trade-in policy and BMWs had lower maintenance costs.
