NORMAN — Oklahoma teachers, among the lowest in salaries, are No. 1 in something else. Their retirement system has some good money managers.

The Oklahoma Teacher Retirement System’s investment return is among the top 1 percent of all public fund investments for Fiscal Year 2013. The 16.3 percent return shows good business practices for the system.

The 2013 investment is good, but the 10-year average return of 10.2 percent may be even brighter. Any public funds that can recover and show that kind of return during an economic downturn is worthy of notice.

The OTRS represents nearly half of the state’s pension portfolio. Lawmakers have taken steps in recent years to reduce the unfunded liability of the state’s retirement funds. With those steps and sound investments, the funds will be on more solid ground when retirees come calling.
