NORMAN — The local weather reports won’t be the same without KWTV-9 meteorologist Gary England on the air.
The longtime Channel 9 meteorologist and Oklahoma City broadcast icon announced he would sign off the air Aug. 30 and take on a new role as vice president for corporate relations and weather development for the Oklahoma City television station.
Mr. England, 73, has been the survivor among Oklahoma City weather personalities.
His mannerisms and demeanor are often the only calming voice during severe weather. He’s even been known to tell his colleagues to “just calm down.”
He has seen his share of severe storms, having grown up in northwestern Oklahoma.
He graduated from OU, did a stint in the Navy and joined KWTV in 1972, long before many of the current-day weather personalities were even born.
His forecasts have sent many of us back to the closet for different clothes or into the shelter to ride out a storm.
He’s not retiring, but we wish him well in his new role at Channel 9.
