NORMAN — The official motto for Mike Fowler’s chairmanship of the Norman Chamber of Commerce is “Moving Norman Forward.” But after Thursday night’s annual banquet, the sub-theme should be, “Let’s Dance, Norman.”
More than 500 chamber members and guests attended the party at the Embassy Suites. President John Woods said it was the largest crowd to attend a chamber banquet.
Fowler, whose family now counts four generations here, arrived with his father, Bill, in 1973. The family opened the city’s first Toyota dealership on the corner of Gray Street and Peters Avenue. Even though they have dealerships and business interests elsewhere, they’ve always lived in Norman.
He replaces banker Andy Sherrer, who presided Thursday night. Sherrer thanked his family, his employer Republic Bank, his board and the chamber’s staff for an exciting year at the helm.
Thursday night was also the first time we got to see some recognizable Norman business leaders dancing on the video queue. Some had noticeably more rhythm than others. Next year’s banquet could include a dance-off. Ticket sales would soar.
