100 years of help

NORMAN — The Cooperative Extension Service in Cleveland County celebrates its 100th birthday today. It comes as part of the county’s Ag Day activities at the fairgrounds, 601 E. Robinson St.

It’s hard to imagine today, but Cleveland County has extensive roots in the agriculture business. There is still a considerable amount of farm and ranchland here, but it’s nothing like it was in the early days.

The celebration comes about a month after the official centennial anniversary celebrated around the nation. May 8 marked 100 years since the signing of the Smith-Lever Act put into federal law programs and funding to expand vocational, agricultural and home demonstration programs in rural America.

The Act authorized federal land grant colleges, such as Oklahoma State University, to reach out into communities and share best practices on farming, home economics at a time when the nation was expanding into rural communities.

A family friendly Ag Day celebration will take place from 9 to noon. A centennial birthday cake will be served at the fairgrounds, beginning at 1 p.m. We’ll see you there.
