Norman on two wheels

The Norman Transcript

NORMAN — It seems odd to hold a sporting event outdoors in Oklahoma this time of year, but that’s the kind of oddities some adventurous outdoor persons want. Look at the Hotter than Hell 100 in Wichita Falls, Texas, or extreme blizzard skiing in Colorado.

The 18th annual Norman Conquest, sponsored by the Bicycle League of Norman, to be hosted Saturday morning is not exactly extreme, but it can be a grueling tour through eastern Cleveland County. The designated 22-, 46- and 64-mile routes take in some scenic parts of central Oklahoma.

It teaches cyclists that Oklahoma is not a flat state and helps raise money for the J.D. McCarty Center’s Camp ClapHans, which began sessions this summer.

Organizers expect about 600 riders to participate Saturday, beginning at 7:30 a.m. For those visiting cyclists, we say welcome to Norman.

For east Norman residents, we appreciate you sharing the road every day but especially Saturday morning.
