Welcome, Music Festival

The Norman Transcript

NORMAN — As early as Wednesday afternoon, downtown Norman was beginning to show signs of anticipation. The Norman Music Festival’s opening was still a day away and yet downtown seemed to have a little more pep in its step.

The fans, musicians, vendors and others began arriving Thursday for the sixth annual Norman Music Festival. More than 200 bands, ranging from country to hip-hop, will perform before the plug is pulled early Sunday morning.

The free festival has come a long way since it began with 20 bands in 2008. The crowds grew from about 20,000 the first year to last year’s 45,000 crowd estimate on Saturday night.

Downtown merchants have been mostly supportive. For some, the festival is an opportunity for marketing and product sales.

Others have to close due to parking and security issues.

Norman has always been a great venue for music. From small bar stages to performances at the Lloyd Noble Center and Riverwind, musical talent has always made Norman a stopover.
