NORMAN — Oklahoma Secretary of Education Dr. Janet Barresi will be in Norman this coming week for a Community Forum on Education and Community Development.
Dr. Barresi is asking for additional funding for common schools. Lawmakers we’ve talked to seem inclined to move forward in restoring some of the cuts made in previous legislative sessions and to fund some of the mandates put on schools.
Also proposed is a move to earmark education’s share of state lottery proceeds for school technology upgrades. That’s a good start if the legislature doesn’t take away that amount from regular education appropriations.
Equipping teachers and students with the latest technology is important and districts like Norman have done that through bond issues.
But maintaining those systems is an expensive, ongoing cost that is not always factored in when the technology is purchased.
