Chad Vice takes oath of office at NPS board meeting

NORMAN — Newly elected Norman Public Schools Board of Education member Chad Vice took his oath of office for Office Seat 4 at a regular school board meeting Monday night.

Vice is managing partner of operations at Havenbrook Funeral Home and has two children in Norman Public Schools. Vice said he is passionate about education and was excited to get started at his first board meeting.

The school board also reorganized and elected Linda Sexton to serve as president for a one-year term and until a successor is elected and qualified. Julie Raadschelders was selected to serve as vice president for a one-year term and until a successor is elected and qualified.

Additionally, the board approved the election of clerk of the board, deputy clerk of the board, deputy minute clerk, encumbrance clerk, deputy encumbrance clerk, treasurer and deputy treasurer.

The board approved several agenda items, including: certification of the vote of the bond issue election Feb. 11; awarding the $28,780,000 general obligation combined purpose bonds, series 2014, to the lowest and best bidder; and acting upon a resolution authorizing the sale of a portion of the school district’s bonds for $2,000, which fixed a time, March 24, for bids to be accepted.

In an overview about the 2014 bond issue, Dr. Roger Brown, assistant superintendent of administrative services, said the district would request qualifications and get moving on interviews and recommend a list of architects to the school board so some projects could begin this summer.

Brown said his goal was to have a list of recommended architects to the board by the first of May.

“With the three-year deadline, it’s very important we use this summer to get started,” he said. “Things like HVAC, roofing projects and parking lots could be worked on so that the community sees results right away.”

The board also recognized students, teachers and community members for awards.
