NORMAN — Norman violin, flute and viola players are putting in extra rehearsal time day and night to make beautiful melodies at an upcoming concert in Tulsa.

The Norman North Orchestra will perform at the Oklahoma Music Educators Association Honor Orchestra Concert in the Assembly Hall of the Tulsa Convention Center on Jan. 17.

The group will be conducted by Brenda Wagner and will perform at 8:30 p.m. The Norman North Orchestra is one of three orchestras selected to perform in the concert after submitting an audition tape last spring. The other two orchestras to perform are the Stillwater High School Orchestra and Oklahoma City University Orchestra.

“We’re excited. We’ve done a few national conventions but never performed in the state convention,” Wagner said. “It’ll be a highlight of the year.”

Irvin L. Wagner also will be featured as a soloist in the trombone and string piece “Someone to Watch Over Me,” composed by George Gershwin. Wagner is a University of Oklahoma David Ross Boyd and Regents Professor of Music. Irvin Wagner is Brenda Wagner’s father.

Although this is not their first time to perform together, Brenda said she always looks forward to such an occasion.

“I always learn a lot from him. He is a master musician,” she said.

At OU, Irvin Wagner teaches trombone and serves as coordinator of graduate music studies. In 2013, he was awarded the Neill Humfeld Award, which recognizes outstanding trombone teaching while honoring the excellence of the late Neill Humfeld.

He also is a trombonist in the Oklahoma City Philharmonic Orchestra and earned his bachelor’s degree from McPherson College, as well as master and doctorate degrees from the Eastman School of Music.

At Eastman, he was a student of the late master teacher of the trombone, Emory Remington.

The orchestra will perform a variety of pieces, including a “Concerto Grosso,” composed by Ernest Bloch, for string and piano that will feature senior William Long on the piano.

Brad Benson, NPS fine arts director, will conduct the orchestra in the well-known piece “Shenandoah.” However, Brenda Wagner said the piece would follow a slightly different arrangement.

The orchestra also will perform newer pieces, such as “Orion and the Scorpion” by Soon Hee Newbold.

Additionally, the Norman North Orchestra will perform in a concert Jan. 14 at the Nancy O’Brian Center for Performing Arts to make up for a December weather cancellation. That concert, which will begin at 7 p.m., will feature the Symphonic String Orchestra.
