Two teachers receive grants

NORMAN — Two Norman teacher’s classrooms will start 2014 off with new materials due to a local Credit Union program.

Francisca Martinez-Jensen, a kindergarten teacher at Wilson Elementary, and Adrien Gates, a third-grade teacher at Kennedy Elementary, were awarded grant money from Oklahoma Educators Credit Union.

Martinez-Jensen was awarded $250 to purchase materials for inside and outside learning.

“With the grant money, I will be able to purchase materials that all kindergarten teachers can use throughout the school year. Our teachers can take these materials outside during a student’s recess time to help them continue the learning from the classroom into their outdoor play time,” she said. “This way, the child engaged in his/her learning is seamless and they can learn through their indoor and outdoor spaces.”

Gates received $485 to purchase yearlong subscriptions to two education sites that her students will utilize on their Chrome books in class. She also plans to purchase math and literacy station supplies, plus a collection of nonfiction books for her classroom library.

“My students need to work hard to be able to make the gains they need to be successful. With the help I received from OECU, I can use technology and hands-on activities to give my students the practice they need,” Gates said.

Each July and November, OECU accepts grant applications from teachers statewide.

In 2013, 75 applications were received and reviewed by its grants committee. In July, 27 grants were awarded, and 15 were awarded in November, totaling more than $17,000 for the year given to Oklahoma teachers.

“Oklahoma Educators Credit Union supports educators and their efforts to bring imaginative and innovative learning projects to their classrooms,” said Cindy White, OECU president. “That’s why we began our Teacher Grant Program — it’s our way to help Oklahoma teachers bring new projects to life.”
