District will not adjust calendar for March snow days

NORMAN — Norman Public Schools announced Wednesday that the snow days taken by the district on Monday and Tuesday would be made up by the district using accumulated, additional instructional minutes to the school day.

These additional minutes have been built into each school day since the beginning of the school year. Thus, school-day start and ending times for NPS remain the same.

“This means students will not have to attend school extra days to make up for our snow days this week and that our 2013-14 calendar will proceed as planned, including there being no classes on Friday, March 14, because of parent-teacher conferences,” said Shelly Hickman, director of NPS communications and community relations.

State law allows districts to meet the minimum requirement for a school year using either minutes or days to calculate their school year. NPS intentionally goes above the state minimum in regard to instructional minutes in its school day to provide flexibility in meeting state law because the extra minutes can be counted by the state for instructional time in the case of extraordinary lost time due to inclement weather.

To date, NPS has canceled school for seven days because of inclement weather. Five of those days will be made up using the accumulated, additional minutes.

Two were made up using designated snow days of Jan. 20 and Feb. 17 in the 2013-14 Board of Education-approved school calendar.

NPS can cancel school for inclement weather two more days this school year without having to adjust its 2013-14 calendar. Accumulated, additional minutes will allow for one more lost day, and April 25 is a designated snow make-up day in the 2013-14 calendar.

“We hope that we have seen the last of severe winter weather,” Hickman said. “But parents will be relieved to know that, if we haven’t, we still have enough accumulated minutes and April 25 to incur two more snow days without having to adjust our calendar at the end of the school year.”
