NORMAN — Judith Ford Scholarship applications available

Norman Public Schools’ Judith A. Ford Arts Scholarship applications are available to students.

The faculty at Eisenhower Elementary School established the scholarship to honor Dr. Judith Ford, who was the founding principal of Eisenhower and served for 19 years.

The scholarship is open to artists in Norman Public Schools who are between 10 and 19 years of age who have not graduated from high school and who will attend a summer arts activity or camp. Selection will be based upon consideration of the young artists’ serious endeavors toward the arts, as well as financial need.

Students can obtain a scholarship application from their arts teacher at each school or from the Fine Arts Department at the Professional Development Center, 207 E. Gray St.

Applications must be turned in by 4:30 p.m. April 24.

Arts in early childhood education

On Saturday, The Oklahoma Alliance for Arts Education and Norman Public Schools have partnered to host a spring conference titled “Enhancing The Arts In Early Childhood Education.”

The conference will feature three presenters from the Kennedy Center Arts Network headquartered in Washington, D.C., and an art educator from Oklahoma.

Early Childhood Education pioneer Dr. Ramona Paul will be honored in memoriam. NPS Superintendent Dr. Joe Siano will present the award to Ramona’s husband, Homer Paul.

Jenny Dunning, a recognized expert in the field of early childhood education and a founder of the Keystone Adventure School in Edmond, will deliver an interactive keynote speech, including online media and sketch pads.

Attendees can participate in two workshops. Topics of the presentations include: “Reaching The Kinesthetic Learner Through Creative Movement;” “Imaginary Journeys Through Sound;” “The Power of Chant: Building Oral Fluency;” and “Slippery, Splat and Squishy: The Sensorial Approach to the Visual Arts.”
