NORMAN — The Jefferson Elementary Shakespeare Club will perform “Midsummer Night’s Dream” this month.
A dress rehearsal for parents will be 6 p.m. Thursday in the school gym. A performance for the whole school, parents and the public will be 1:30 p.m. April 18 in the school gym. Attendees should check into the office before making their way to the gym.
Students practiced and memorized an edited version of the Shakespeare play since January in preparation for the April performance.
Cynthia Reed, M.Ed. has organized children’s Shakespearean productions since 2004. This year, Reed worked with students in first through fifth grades from Jefferson’s gifted and talented classes.
“Some of the kids have found their niche,” said Dana Stair, Jefferson Elementary gifted resources coordinator. “It’s been great to see a lot of the students blossom throughout this project.”
The club meets weekly on Thursdays to rehearse and discuss production ideas, costuming and set design.
Additionally, each child went through an audition process for roles and is involved in staging and costume. The funding for the play was established with a grant from the Norman Arts Council and organized with the help of the volunteer efforts of Reed and parents.
