NORMAN — Norman Public School student athletes will participate in the qualifier competition for the state Special Olympics today.

The Boomer Sooner Area Athletics Competition, which will involve five counties, is being held at Norman High School, with team registration beginning at 8 a.m. and Opening Ceremonies at 8:45 a.m.

Curtis Boyer, area director for the Special Olympics and a member of Wilson Elementary’s faculty, said more than 70 NPS students and Norman citizens will participate in the competition. More than 350 athletes from the five counties that make up the Boomer Sooner Area (Cleveland, McClain, Grady, Seminole and Pottawatomie) are expected to compete.

“Our athletes must be 8 years of age to participate and there is no upper age limit. Each athlete may participate in two individual events and they must have pre-registered,” Boyer said, adding students younger than 8 can participate in the Young Athletes, Stars of the Future program, which will be held in conjunction with the Boomer Sooner event and will begin at 9:45 a.m.

Each of NPS’ teams have a coach who has completed Special Olympics Oklahoma certification and worked with school physical education teachers to prepare and train student athletes.

After today’s area competition, the next step for NPS’ student athletes will be Special Olympics Oklahoma, to be held May 14-16 in Stillwater.
