Local students win contest

NORMAN — Three Norman students were rewarded first place for trying their hands at fiction essays for the Oklahoma Daughters of the American Revolution American History Essay Contest.

Sean Cheng, Karina Feng and Keever Jane Greer wrote captivating essays about the lives of children during the American Revolution and were each awarded a first place medal for their respective age divisions, certificate and $50 cash prize.

All three are from the Black Beaver Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution. Judges included Grettie Bondy, Patti Hudson and Nancy Roley.

Greer, eighth grade Alcott Middle School student, said her essay followed the main character whose father and brother go off to war during the American Revolution.

“She disguises herself as a boy and serves food in the camps so that she can be close to her father and brother,” Greer said.

This is Greer’s second year to enter and win first place in the Oklahoma Daughters of the American Revolution Essay Contest. Her essay was so engaging that it went on to win first place in the Daughters of the American Revolution South Central Division Essay Contest. Greer beat out state winners from Kansas, Texas, Missouri, Oklahoma, Arkansas, and Louisiana, and her essay will be judged in the Daughters of the American Revolution National Essay Contest this May.

Greer said she entered the competition after learning about American History in her social studies class.

“I have a lot of family, like my great aunt, who are interested in American History and that made me want to enter the competition,” she said.

Greer is the daughter of Jeff and Susan Greer. She spends her free time active in sports including soccer, track and basketball.

Karina Feng, seventh grade Whittier Middle School student, said her essay focused on the big changes in her main character’s, Eleanor, life when her family goes to war.
