Local students win contest

(Continued)

NORMAN —

“I’m really interested in colonial era times and researching American History,” Feng said. “I write poetry as a hobby. Historical fiction came easy for me because the facts are there, and I just had to build my story around them.”

Feng whose favorite school subjects are history and math also participates in several academia clubs including Science Olympiad and Academic Bowl. She is the daughter of Buck and Gladys Feng.

Sean Cheng, fifth grade Roosevelt Elementary student, said he had never written fiction before entering the essay contest.

“I wrote about the narrator’s family. The father went to war. The sister made candles and the mom had to work,” Cheng explained.

Cheng said Kristi Hartman, gifted resource coordinator, told him about the essay contest and he decided to give it a try.

“I thought ‘why not practice writing?’” he said.

Cheng is the son of Qi Cheng and Fang Fang. He said he spends his free time playing soccer and the piano.
