Four file for area school board seats

NORMAN — The filing period for Board of Education members opened Monday morning, and four people had filed by the end of the day.

No one has filed for the Norman School District No. I-29, Office No. 4 seat. The incumbent, Don Shandy, does not plan to file.

Filing Monday were Max D. Venard for Moore Norman Technology Center No. 17, Zone 4, Office No. 4; Paul W. Garrett for Lexington School District No. I-57, Office No. 4; and Rodney Barrett for Noble School District No. I-40, Office No. 4. John B. Southerland, Robin Hill, Office No. 1.

Venard is the incumbent of the MNTC Zone 4, Office No. 4 seat. Venard is an optometrist in Moore who graduated from the Southern College of Optometry in Memphis and earned a Bachelor of Science from Oklahoma State University.

He is a member of several professional and civic organizations, including Oklahoma TLC Laser Eye Center, Board of Advisors; The Child Project for Missing Children, National Optometric Advisor; Association of Christian Investigators, Advisory Board, Missing Children; Mustang Club of America; Oklahoma Mustang Club; Gideons International member; and St. Andrews Methodist Church member.

Garrett is the incumbent for the Lexington School District No. I-57, Office No. 4 seat. He currently serves as president of the Noble Board of Education.

Barrett also is the incumbent of the Noble School District No. I-40, Office No. 4 seat. Barrett has a master’s degree from the University of Oklahoma and is employed by the State Department of Health, where he has been employed for 20 years providing therapeutic intervention for developmentally delayed children.

Southerland is the incumbent in the Robin Hill district. 

The Election Board will continue to accept Declarations of Candidacy from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. today and Wednesday. Declarations of Candidacy are available at the Election Board Office or at clevelandcountyelectionboard.com and are required to be notarized. There is no filing fee for School Board Candidates.
