NPS announces teachers of the yr.

NORMAN — The votes are in, and each school within the Norman Public Schools district has selected its 2012-13 site teachers of the year. The 24 winners were formally announced Thursday and now will vie to be selected as a finalist for NPS Teacher of the Year.

Ultimately, the district’s winner also will be its entry for the state Teacher of the Year competition.

“We offer our sincere congratulations to these outstanding NPS faculty members,” Superintendent Dr. Joe Siano said. “Our students, their principals and the winners’ fellow educators are very fortunate to have them on the NPS team.”

The reigning NPS Teacher of the Year is Sara Leader, a reading specialist at Adams Elementary. Her successor will be among the 24 site teachers of the year announced and will be tapped in April at the district’s annual Celebration of Excellence banquet. Finalists will be announced in February.

Beth Spears, NPS director of staff development and student achievement, said the selection process at NPS recognizes teachers who exemplify the finest in the education profession and who can effectively communicate and inspire their peer educators.

Site winners are identified via a process involving their school staff development committees and a vote of their entire faculty. District finalists and winners are chosen through a process facilitated by the Office of Staff Development involving portfolios and interviews.

The district winner competes in the state competition coordinated by the Oklahoma Department of Education, which is a recognized affiliate of the National Teacher of the Year program coordinated by the National Council of Chief State School Officers.
