Norman North graduation

NORMAN — The University of Oklahoma’s Lloyd Noble Center was a sea of emerald as Norman North High School’s class of 2013 gathered with thousands of family and friends to celebrate their commencement.

Preceding reflections by graduates Alex Zhu, Emma Youngblood, 2013 class president Courtney Clark, Principal Bryan Young and Superintendent Joe Siano was a moment of silence for the state’s tornado victims.

A performance by the NNHS Jazz Choir provided musical highlights, as the choir sang “In my Life” by Lennon & McCarntney and “Fix You” by Coldplay.

“Four years ago we entered Norman North unsure of the future, scared or excited. Now the school looks up to us as we led North through its most successful year,” Zhu said. “If we accomplished what we did as high school students, imagine what we’ll accomplish next.”

Accomplishment was the distinct theme of the evening, as all three graduates focused heavily on the class of 2013’s successes athletically and philanthropically, with Siano’s brief remarks also reflecting a theme of pride and optimism.

“There is nothing more important than celebrating the success of our schools as we do tonight,” Siano said.

“Our hope as your faculty and administrators is that your education will empower you to accomplish your future goals as you proceed.”

Major points of pride for 2013’s Norman North grads were athletic accolades at the state level and particularly the school’s raising more than $200,000 in its annual fundraiser, SPUD week.

“We each contributed something highly individual to our school and our class,” Clark said. “But what truly defined and set us apart was our coming together as individuals to collectively accomplish a goal together.”
