NORMAN — On Friday Monroe Elementary, 1601 S. McGee, will celebrate 50 years with activities for current and former students, teachers, staff and families.
“Monroe is excited to welcome back our former students, teachers, and staff to celebrate this 50-year milestone,” Monroe Principal Dr. Lori Connery said. “We have a rich tradition at Monroe which has been made possible by everyone who has walked through our halls.”
Kicking off the festivities at 1:15 p.m. will be a Good Afternoon Monroe with student performances and the unveiling of a mural painted by Monroe teacher Yolly Beckenhauer.
From 3:30 to 4:30 p.m., there will be a dessert reception in the library for current and former Monroe teachers and staff.
From 6 to 7 p.m., the school will be open so members of the Monroe family, past and present, can see the facilities while enjoying current student artwork that decorates the halls. All are welcome to take advantage of guided tours by student council members.
The 50th Celebration begins at 7 p.m. in the gym. A live band will provide entertainment and complimentary finger food and refreshments will be served. Parking assistance will be available for those who need it in Monroe’s south parking lot.
During the party, attendees can purchase an engraving on a Monroe brick paver for $55 or a 50th Anniversary school-wide picture of current staff and students taken earlier in the school year for $10. Friday will be the only opportunity to purchase these items.
Leading up to the anniversary, all classes contributed items to a time capsule for future Monroe Mustangs to enjoy.
