Star party to celebrate National Astronomy Day

NORMAN — The community can experience safe solar viewing, as well as a telescope view of the night sky, Saturday at Washington Elementary School, 600 SE 48th St.

From 3 to 4 p.m., attendees will participate in solar observing. From 9 to 11 p.m., attendees will participate in night sky observing.

Solar viewing will utilize solar scopes and sunspotters. Night sky observing will teach attendees how to use a planisphere and identify the planets Jupiter, Mars and Saturn and more.

The event is weather permitting. Children must be accompanied by a parent or adult sponsor. Attendees are encouraged to bring flashlights and dress in weather-appropriate layers.

The event is sponsored by Norman North astronomy classes and members of the OKC Astronomy Club and Odyssey Astronomy Club.
