Roosevelt turns 20

NORMAN — Roosevelt Elementary School will celebrate its 20th anniversary on Thursday with events for students, teachers, parents and alumni.

An all-school assembly will take place during the Roosevelt Rendezvous at 7:50 a.m. Former administrators, staff members and students will be part of the celebration. Three staff members who have been at Roosevelt for 20 years also will be honored. Parents and alumni are encouraged to attend.

Throughout the year students and teachers have been preparing items for the 20-year time capsule. Items include student descriptions of this year’s current events, current pop culture, happenings at Roosevelt and student predictions for the future. The capsule will be officially sealed during the assembly and re-opened in 2034.

Other activities include the dedication of Theodore Roosevelt inspired artwork in the library and the rededication of a tile mural made by students more than 10 years ago. Students also will celebrate in the afternoon on the playground with snow cones and other fun.

“It’s been an amazing 20 years and it has been so fun to be part of the school’s growth over the years,” said Debbie McWhorter, school counselor who has worked at the school for 20 years. “One thing that has remained consistent over the years is the supportive community, including teachers and parents, that rise up every day to create an outstanding learning environment at our school.”

Principal Tiffany Dixon has been at Roosevelt for two years and embraces the legacy she is helping to build.

“Our teachers and parents are second to none and I’m so proud to be part of the educational excellence that happens every day at Roosevelt. The standard was set high 20 years ago and we continue to live up to and elevate that standard every day in our classrooms,” Dixon said.
