NORMAN — With their second year under way, Reagan Elementary, 1601 24th Ave. SE, is ready to take on the world at the speed of a roadrunner. After a school-wide vote taken at the beginning of last year, students selected the roadrunner to be their mascot over rockets and rhinos.

Reagan Elementary counselor Janne Lawson said while the school does not have a physical mascot, students have seen real roadrunners around the area. Since the selection of a school mascot, Reagan has developed the slogan “Reagan Roadrunners Travel the World” in connection with Norman Public Schools’ Positive Behavior Program.

“With our slogan, the image of a roadrunner is placed on top of an image of the world, and students learn that W.O.R.L.D. stands for ‘work smart, offer support, respect self and others, lead by example and demonstrate creativity,’” Lawson said.

When a Reagan student’s actions exemplify this motto, any member of the school staff can award the student a globe sticker and have that student’s name placed in a once-a-week drawing for a prize. Students also may be selected once a month for their good deeds and have their picture taken with a stuffed roadrunner.
