NORMAN — The Norman North High School Band will be honored with a citation in the State Senate Chambers at 1 p.m. today to begin their official fundraising efforts to be a featured band Dec. 7 at the Pearl Harbor Memorial Parade in Hawaii.

The entire Cleveland County legislative delegation — including Rep. Bob Cleveland, Rep. Aaron Stiles, Rep. Emily Virgin, Rep. Scott Martin, Sen. John Sparks and Sen. Rob Standridge — have worked together to get the citation approved to honor the band and their efforts to help honor those who gave their lives.

To celebrate the citation, the band will perform in concert at 8:15 p.m. in the Nancy O’Brian Performing Arts Center, 1809 Stubbeman Ave. Legislators will present the citation of congratulations to the band during the concert.

The Pearl Harbor Memorial Parade seeks to attract marching bands from each state whose namesake battleship was moored in Pearl Harbor on Dec. 7, 1941.

According to the Senate citation, the Timberwolves Marching Band will be the first to represent the U.S.S. Oklahoma and its crew, which lost 429 members in the attack.

Surviving U.S.S. Oklahoma crewmember Ed Vezey — a Cleveland County resident — has added his support to the effort.

Vezey, along with Admiral Greg Slavonic and the entire Cleveland County legislative delegation, will begin the task of raising the funds necessary to represent the state of Oklahoma at the prestigious event.
