Elementary class to decorate Governor Fallin’s Christmas tree

NORMAN — Blue for the eyes, red for the hair and a rainbow of color everywhere else. Crayons swirled and scribbled across the page in furious excitement as Danielle Hogle’s students colored paper cutouts of children from around the world. The Reagan Elementary School kindergarten class made international inspired ornaments Thanksgiving week that they will hang at the Governor’s Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony on Tuesday, Dec. 3.

Hogle said her class made ornaments in the shape of the world and covered them with school pictures to represent their school symbol and acronym. Every day, Reagan Elementary students review the following: W.O.R.L.D. ‘W’ stands for work hard; ‘O’ stands for offer support; ‘R’ stands for respect self and others; ‘L’ stands for lead by example; and ‘D’ stands for demonstrate creativity.

“I wanted to make this a school-wide event, so the ornaments include pictures of the whole school and not just my classroom,” Hogle explained.

Additionally, Hogle made a globe tree topper with cutouts of children from around the world attached to it for a 3-D effect. Hogle’s class was the only one selected out of the Norman Public School district to take part in the Governor’s Christmas Tree Lighting ceremony.

Hosted by the Office of Governor Mary Fallin, the Oklahoma State Department of Education, the Oklahoma Arts Council, the Office of Management & Enterprise Services and the Oklahoma Highway Patrol, selected kindergarten through fifth-grade classes will be responsible for decorating four-foot artificial trees. Additionally, students will be able to take part in a variety of activities including photos with Governor Mary Fallin and State Superintendent Janet Barresi, a visit from Santa, cookies and punch, storybook reading and musical entertainment.

Kaylah Robertson, kindergartner, said out of all the activities, Santa and everything else were on the bottom of her list.
