NORMAN — Twenty-one Westmoore High School Speech and Debate Team members competes at the recent Regional Speech & Debate Tournament at Putnam City North High School.
High school students who had earned top honors at qualifying tournaments throughout the school year from across the region competed in competitive acting, public speaking and debating events for the honor to participate at the State Speech and Debate Tournament. The state tournament will be April 11-12 at the University of Oklahoma.
Two Westmoore members achieved 6A Regional Champion honors: Samantha Manning, Original Oratory; and Zoe McKee, Humorous Interpretation.
In the Humorous Interpretation event, Westmoore High School students swept top honors, with Jillian Buxton earning second place runner-up status and Manning earning third.
Additional Westmoore performances earned the honor to compete at the State Speech and Debate Tournament: Grady Milligan, Dramatic Interpretation; Taelyr Jackson and Buxton, Dramatic Duet; Zoe McKee, Monologue; and McKee and Buxton, Humorous Duet.
Westmoore students also were recognized as alternates for the state tournament. State alternates include: Sesily Monday, Humorous Interpretation; Daraja Stewart, Monologue; Caroline Shepard, Poetry; and Christian Davis and Alicia Sell, Humorous Duet.
Future performances will raise funds for the Westmoore Speech and Debate Team. Four performance nights showcasing this year’s winning performances will be 7 p.m. Tuesday, April 25, May 9 and May 20 at Westmoore High School Lecture Center.
