NPS to host 12th annual festival

NORMAN — Norman Public Schools announced that its 12th annual Get the Lead Out! (GLO) Festival for Young Writers and Artists is open to NPS and non-NPS students. The event will be from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Feb. 8 at Longfellow Middle School.

The festival celebrates the creative efforts of students in grades fourth-eighth. Its goal is to promote the arts and writing also while building awareness among students of diverse career opportunities.

Monty Harper, an award-winning children’s singer/songwriter, will be the keynote speaker. GLO registrants can participate in art and writing competitions, as well as hands-on breakout sessions led by professionals from across the state.

Breakout sessions this year will feature novelists, artists, illustrators, songwriters, cartoonists, poets, jewelry crafters, bookmakers, actors and many more.

In connection with GLO, contests will be hosted in poetry, prose and art. There are two divisions in each category: elementary (grades fourth and fifth) and middle school (grades sixth through eighth). Cash prizes of $25, $15 and $10 will go to winners of the first, second and third places, respectively, in each category.

All entries must be the sole work of a student registered for the festival. Participants must be present to win. Complete competition rules may be accessed at norman.k12.ok.us/502.

Registration is $25 through Friday and $30 after that. Registration includes supplies, breakout sessions, a snack and a GLO T-shirt.

To register or for more information, call Traci Argo at 366-5948 or email tracia@norman.k12.ok.us, or email Mandy Woodford at r.woodford@cox.net. On-site registration will be Feb. 8 in the Longfellow cafeteria.
