NORMAN — What will the Oklahoma environment be like in 40 years? The Cleveland County Conservation District, in partnership with the University of Oklahoma Lean Institute and OU Writing Center, asks writers to consider this question in “The Earth Is the Limit: Eco-Essays for the Future” essay contest.

Essay entrants are free to write about earth’s future in general or focus on one topic. Essays should take the form of “letters to the future” on the need for and effect of sustainable living practices.

Essays should be no more than 1,000 words and can include images. Age categories include: children 6-10; youth 11-16; young adult 17-21; adult 22-59; and senior 60-plus.

All entries will be stored on an external drive and placed in a time capsule to be buried on Earth Day 2014 and then unearthed and opened on Earth Day 2054. The winning essays in each age category will be printed on archival quality paper and placed in the time capsule.

Additionally, the OU Writing Center will publish a small booklet that will include the winning essays in each age category, and all winning essays will be printed in The Norman Transcript.

To submit an essay, send essay via email to the OU Writing Center,, with the subject line “Sustainability Essay Contest Entry.” Email should include essay author’s name, title of essay, age category of author and author’s email address, mailing address and phone number. Essays may be submitted in the following formats: .doc, .docx or .rtf.

Submissions will be accepted through Dec. 15. Winners will be announced by Feb. 15.
