Roamin' and Ramblin' Earwig Music Company Honeyboy will be 93 in June. His first recordings were by Alan Lomax in 1942 for the legendary Library of Congress sessions. Before and since, Honeyboy has traveled the globe playing delta blues guitar and singing about women, trains and moving on down the line. R--R is 19 tracks including some carefully plucked from the past 7 decades. The majority of the album is studio recordings made in 2007 with Bobby Rush, Johnny "Yard Dog" Jones and Billy Branch. The songs are elegant in their simplicity. "I Was in New Orleans Last Night," is from a live 1976 concert at a Chicago Second Unitarian Church. Honeyboy's guitar weaves in and out of the blues harp line like a king snake gliding through the garden. His soft, often indistinct vocal phrasings have the warmth and comfort of a plate of sorghum and skillet bread. "R--R" has glad and sad moments that embody the blues enigma. The title track may be the best prescription ever against being down-hearted. Whether early low-fidelity recordings or last year's Joyride Studio products, Honeyboy sounds like the national treasure he is. -- Doug Hill
